Virginia, our friend Shannon and I went for a bike ride this afternoon. After all the heat of last week, it was ONLY 90 and there was a fresh breeze blowing. This is Virginia and Shannon at Green Lane, at the end of the Perkiomen Trail.

    Also today:
    – Peter had his first driving lesson in the Methacton parking lot; all involved parties are resting comfortably.
    – Kelly reported for camp in the Adirondacks. He’s very excited. Third year he’s attended, with his friend Alex. They love it. We’ll pick him up with a marathon road trip next Saturday. Can’t wait ;)
    – Kevin visited his pals at Wellsprings. All I can say is, Liberal religious worship done right. Intelligent, inspiring stuff.
    – Virginia taught a summer program at our church.

    Have a good week.

Get off the road! Pete’s got his permit. And he survived the DMV, too.

Kelly and his friend Alex are headed back to summer camp in upstate NY on Saturday for a week’s stay. They have had a great time there each of the past two years. (Here they are with Virginia in 2009, giving us a tour of the place.)

Kelly’s doing well. He’s had his second treatment with Remicade, and is feeling stronger. Even better, his attitude has been awesome and he’s taking more responsibility for his health, including lots of cooking (yes, cooking). Virginia and I are very grateful for his good work, and for his recovering health in general.

We’ll see you in a week, Kelly. Enjoy!

Kelly was at CHOP today for his second infusion of Remicade, and came home with some good news. He’s up to 98 pounds. He was almost 10 pounds less than that 12 days ago. Still has another 10 pounds to get back to where he was two months ago, but you gotta love the trend line. Despite the photo here, from our lunch Sunday in NJ, he’s doing it the right way—he’s started to cook himself breakfast most days and is getting more protein and less refined sugar, which was the one admonition we received from the doctor during our stay.

Kelly just got some more cookbooks (Thanks, Mary!) and he’s picking through the breakfast section of Cook This Not That! Virginia and I are really proud of his attitude. Keep it up, kid!

  • Virginia and I caught Solitary Man at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. A woman from the Institute spoke to us before the film started and said we’d see Michael Douglas “as we’d never seen him before” and then we watched the same ol’ Michael Douglas playing the same ol’ role. It was Gordon Gekko after the SEC gets finished with him. We enjoyed it all the same, but this is Wonderboys II.

Speaking of movies, don’t miss our friend Sandy’s list of favorite movies. Your sneak peak? No. 2: Crossing Delancey. No. 1, and the rest, are here.

A pretty sunset before fireworks in our hometown. Virginia and I watched from Eskie Park.

That’s Pete with his (second) cousin Tommy. We were all in Hazlet, at the Stansfields, on July 3. All had a good time. My nephew Nick did the most amazing victory dance after winning a yard game, but I’m not sure the world is ready to see it. Photos from the weekend here

Virginia’s showing off our first cherry tomatoes of 2010. Which is great, because it’s getting ungodly hot (100-plus) for the first half of the week and none of us can remember the last time it rained nor when it’s supposed to rain next. Also, we have a groundhog trying desperately to get into our garden. But we’re in Churchill mode — “we’ll fight on the beach, in the air, in the backyard. We will never surrender!”
