Oscar nominees were released today and Virginia and I have a lot of film-watching to do if we’re going to have informed opinions.

But, heck, who needs informed opinions?!?!

As I’ve often said at our neighbor’s Oscars party, seeing the movies only gets in the way of picking the winners.

We’ve seen Atonement, Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men. Hopefully, that won’t screw up my prognosticatin’.

Best Movie: Michael Clayton, Atonement, Juno, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. Not enough laughs in Old Men, not enough sweep to Clayton, Atonement had that interminable, showy scene at Dunkirk, the awful little girl and no laughs. Absent a write-in for Simpsons Movie, I’m going with Daniel Day Lewis and There Will Be Blood.

Best actor: George Clooney, to make Virginia happy. (But really, it will be Daniel Day Lewis.)

Best actress: Laura Linney. Didn’t see a one of these movies and, Juno excepted, never hope to.

Supporting actress/actor: Who cares, but Blanchett and the bad ass from No Country …

The day dawned cold (15 degrees) but warmed up enough that a trash-cleaning walk along Germantown Ave. was, for the most part, comfortable.

The boys went with a friend to help paint hallways at a nearby school. There were so many people, though, that they ended up helping to make sandwiches – lots of sandwiches – for the homeless. They didn’t complain, so it must not have been as bad as that sounds.

The trash pickup was actually a bit of social action. The Pa. DOT has launched a massive project to upgrade sewer along G’town Ave., but it has had a big impact on local businesses. In addition, PennDOT has refused to pay to have the trash thrown off by the project cleaned up. The trash we cleaned up may eventually end up dumped in the office of the local city councilperson.

Sometimes, justice smells a little rancid …

  • Whatever happened to that Barack Obama landslide? Virginia, ‘splain to me! And, do we really want this person to be our president?!?

In Kevin’s time at Men’s Health, the most interesting stuff on the site has been this thing called ‘Eat This, Not That.’ It’s some counterintuitive comparisons of meals from fast food and sit-down chains.

The information is pretty interesting – like the advice to eat three Egg McMuffins rather than a bran muffin. Check it out. And comment.

Hopefully, dad’s leg feels better than it has this winter and he hits the course this spring.

Speaking of warmer weather, Virginia and the Boys are planning a trip to Florida March 18-25. Kevin will be working and saving up his vacation for the summer. It looks like there will be several family friends in Orlando at the same time. Va. and the Boys also looking forward to catching up with the Lindsays, in Naples. It should be a lot of fun.

Virginia has had Obama Fever from the beginning and now it looks like the Democratic voters across the country are catching it!

CNN is reporting he has opened up a 13-point lead (42-29) in New Hampshire over Hilary.

On the Republican side, a paper boy from Manchester just declared his candidacy and immediately shot into first place, 6 points ahead of John McCain. The only thing more ridiculous than Mike Huckabee being the GOP candidate is the idea that Rudy, Mitt or Fred Thompson are a better choice. My lord, the wheels have fallen off the pickup …

This is the most annoying girl in the world. She was in ‘Atonement,’ which Virginia and I saw this week. It was OK, but we deemed it not Oscar-worthy.

We liked ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ better. Tom Hanks has rebounded from that darn ‘Da Vinci Code’ debacle and got his hair back under control.

What movies have you seen? What’s good?

My choice for Best Picture remains … ‘The Simpsons Movie.’
