Kelly had his usual great time at his two-week summer camp in upstate NY, Unirondack. Kevin drove up and retrieved him today, along with another camper, Calder, who lives in Annapolis, Md. It was a lot of driving, but Kelly looks forward to the camp all year long.

Also, Pete is back after his summer session at Bloomsburg. Next up, we’re headed to Rehoboth Beach, Del., for 3 days, then we’ll run over to Baltimore to see Virginia’s family (and the Baltimore Orioles vs. Red Sox at Camden Yards). Should be fun.

We had a chance to spend more time with Virginia’s cousin Mary during our Columbus visit than we have in, well, a very long time—which was great.

Virginia and I went to Columbus, Ohio, to visit Aunt Doris, who recently moved into a new place. VIrginia’s cousin Mary was there as well, and we had a great, extended (4-day) visit. Photos from our travels and visit.

Today we dropped Kelly off at his summer camp, Unirondack, where he’ll stay for the next two weeks. We drove up yesterday from Philly (where we had some education on a new treatment protocol we’re adopting for his IBD) to Syracuse to see—and stay with—friends overnight.

We dropped Kelly off at camp Sunday afternon, but not until we had made the traditional stop at Jeb’s, a restaurant in Lowville, NY, the town nearest camp. Kelly got his “usual,” an Adirondack burger (pictured above).

  • Kelly came to work with me on Thursday, when we had garguantuan trainer and supremely good guy Dave Jack in town to shoot a series of exercise videos. Not only did Dave treat Kelly like a king, but he showed him how to arm-wrestle. And let him win. My favorite part is when they link hands, and you can see a very anxious Kelly physically gulp and (I imagine) wonder if he is about to have his entire arm ripped off.

We visited for two days with our friends Dan and Maryann, who vacation each summer with their friends Priscilla and John Frece, at Bethany Beach, Del. They were just across the street from the beach (awesome) and there were a bunch of 20something young people—John and Priscilla’s son and daughter, a friend and a boyfriend—to keep up the energy.

Somehow, our nephew Nick has never spent an overnight with us—until last weekend, when we rectified this shortcoming. And we had a blast. Nick is a history buff, so a visit to Philadelphia is a natural, and a visit to the Franklin Instiute was a double-natural. We had a good time, walked down to Love Park, then headed for home.

Along the way we learned a lot about Nick—his love for Napoleon Bonaparte (check out photo #8), his mastery of the history of Europe (even thought he’s just 11), and his somewhat conflicted interest in having a female companion (that’s his new GF in photo #4—OK, we tease!).

  • What can I say, they’ve become hard to find. I’ll start shooting the second I see one for the next week. But Pete’s in Bloomsburg and Kelly is hanging with Mike one night and the girlfriend the next.

Virginia used a Williams & Sonoma gift card from the Kirks to purchase an ice cream maker. First batch: strawberry. Second batch: We’ll see if there’s a second batch. Focus, Donahue family, focus!

Virginia and I went for a bike ride last weekend to the state park at Green Lane, via the local bike trails. Took about 2 hours and, no, we didn’t jump in a canoe to get home.

  • Sometimes at Men’s Health, we get the use of pretty high-end, sweet cars (one of our editors used to be an auto writer). Anyway, this month I got to sit in (I was too afraid to actually drive it) a $350,000 Bentley Mulsanne (it’s back-seat stereo system costs $9,000!). Better yet, I drove home a Mercedes SUV (sticker price, a paltry $94,500). It was an absolute beast with like 500 hp, so powerful that it was, in fact, difficult to keep the car under 95 mph on the Northeast Extension—and, yes, I know how ludicrous that sounds. It was what I was going to tell the State Trooper if I got pulled over—and believe me, if I drove that for 3 days, I would have met a State Trooper. It also seemed to get about 9 mpg. You could almost hear the glug-glug sound over the beefy thrum of the engine.

That didn’t bother Kelly when I brought it home and we drove around in it. Or Carmella, our friend’s dog, who took the wheel. The next day, I turned over the keys and wished it well—only to see it appear next to my car a day later. What’s that they say about what it means when you let something go, only to see it return? Ah, love. Now I just need to find the 100g … not.

  • The British soft-rock supergroup passed through Philly this weekend and Kelly and his friends Mike and David caught them Friday. They loved it. And they took the train to the concert, making it an even more adventurtous evening.
