Both boys went, and Virginia and I later snuck off to catch Moneyball, which was long and a bit disappointing. They both had fun, though Kelly won’t tell us why or how it was fun. Peter had a blast.

The team voted and called itself the 76ers, of all things. Kevin’s one of the coaches. We’re 2-2.

Right in the middle, looking a lot like my brother Chris. Found the photo while clearing out the basement. [Kevin]

No surprise that Kevin’s mom had some water in her basement last week, and we went over to join Sue and Justin in helping ot move some stuff out, throw other stuff out, and gawk at the stuff that disappeared into the shadows decades ago—like Sue’s Raggedy Ann and Cabbage Patch dolls, my Little League champ trophy from 1979, my old Doors poster, my mom’s wedding dress, and photos of my dad in the military. The time went pretty fast and Kelly was a great help.

Kevin’s bike ride along the Perkiomen Creek last weekend. Water high, but no longer at flood stage—a frequent subject this past month, sadly—and you can see by this photo that junk got stuck under the bridge during the heavy rains.
Last couple days have been sunny and in the 80s, and Thursday Kevin and Virginia are ging to Phillies game with Rev. Kent Matthies.

Visited the Alexanders, who were celebrating jennifer’s 17th birthday, and they had pulled out old videos from our visits with them at Sea Isle City and first days of school so long ago. We laughed so hard we almost cried. Above are screen grabs I took with my iPhone. They don’t catch the detail at all—the bouncy assertiveness of Scott, Pete’s joyless purpose on the minigolf course, Kelly and Mike’s buddyhood. You can catch Jen’s smile, though, in Photo No. 2.

Kevin’s brother Chris had his annual Labor Day party and we had a blast! The weather held, the supply of beer more than held out, the youngsters commanded the pool, we saw Uncle Tom once more before he headed to Myrtle Beach, and Kelly reprised his role as bartender, which was funny. And we added a new wrinkle, with Pete as an alternate driver. He got grandma home without incident, at 11:30.
And now, school starts Tuesday. Pete’s a senior, Kelly a freshman. Let the year begin!!!
Photos above; 1) Richie isn’t afraid to take a direct hit from the water gun; 2) Bedlam in the pool; 3) Uncle Tom and Grandma talk with Pete at the Barzeebo; 4) Kely settles in as barkeep, next to Mike Roberts.

Exhibit A in we’re getting old is when kids I taught in Sunday school get married—like Shannon Elrod, to her great partner Dan Dingman. And to add insult to (not-really) injury, I saw another student from those good old days, the former Katie Feras, with her beautiful, 7-week-old daughter Lila (and dutiful husband Jared), at the wedding. Babies, too! My god, I’m old!!
Anyway, my intimations of mortality aside, it was a lot of fun. Our friends Brad and Shirley Elrod clearly had a blast, and we saw some old friends (and some new ones as well). The moment Virginia and I are waiting to see is when Brad and Shannon’s father-daughter dance turned into a hip-hop routine to a Black Eyes Peas song, with Brad an enthusiastic participant. It was hilarious. We’ll post when we see video of it (you know it’s coming).
I didn’t know Dan much at all before Peter and I visited Chicago this summer, where Dan and Shannon are living, and met up with them and Dan’s parents for deep-dish pizza. We had a very nice visit and you could see that they were a great couple, and that Dan’s parents were super people, too.
So we had a great day, Dan and Shannon had a better one—and now it’s back to the grind.

We got off easy—kept power throughout the storm, which dropped a hellacious amount of water but never really blew up into a really vicious hurricane (2nd photo is our Sunday paper, which arrived by 10 am). Virginia’s cousin Mary is still without power in Baltimore on Friday, six days after the storm passed. Sheesh!
Last photo is the view from our back deck at about 4:30 pm Sunday, when skies cleared and the breeze blew fresh as fall.
