We got to Sykesville, Md., on Sunday for Uncle Edmund’s viewing, and spent some time with Aunt Adele and family, including a nice dinner spread back at Adele’s house.

Monday we got up and attended the funeral. Priest did a very nice job of framing Edmund’s life of service. At the cemetery, Edmund was buried with full military honors, including an honor guard, a gun salute, and the playing of taps. Adele was given the US flag that had been draped over the coffin, and some words of gratitude form the presenting soldier. It was powerful stuff.

Glad we were there, glad that Doris was able to make it from Ohio, and glad that Cousin Mary was there for Adele.

Virginia visited in late June, with her mom and Doris, and here are photos from then.

Virginia’s Uncle Edmund (that’s him with Roz and Doris at a family party on June 26, 2009) passed away this week. He was 89, lived in Sykesville, Md., with his wife Adele, and suffered a heart attack. Didn’t feel good after dinner, got into an ambulance singing songs and asking Adele to bring his rosary to the hospital. He died on the trip there.

We’ll remember Edmund for his long, fruitful life, his service to our country in World War II, and his pluck over the last 10 years. How many people are admitted to a nursing home and come out to live at home? I doubt it happens all that often. But Edmund did it. Remarkable.

We’re headed to Md. for a viewing Sunday and a funeral Monday. Virginia will write later in the week.

Keep Edmund, his wife, and all the family in your prayers.

Mesa Verde Spruce Tree, originally uploaded by Griffin_Beste.

We’ll be heading out west for a 10-day jaunt around the Southwest, from Vegas to the Grand Canyon to Mesa Verde (pictured) to Moab and Salt Lake City and Zion and Bryce Canyon and … who knows, whatever we find in between. We’re starting to get excited, though there’s plnety still to do here in the meantime.

One thing we don’t have to do anymore is get to basketball games. Pete’s team won and Kelly’s lost (though not until they made a great comeback to force overtime) in their summer league championship games.

Expect lots of photos and the boys may provide an audio feed throughout the trip (we’ll see).

The boys went to Florida with my parents (thank you, Grandma and Pop-Pop!!!) and Virginia and I enjoyed some quiet time. ONe night we watched this Coen Brothers’ comedy—and we couldn’t stop laughing. Brad Pitt and Frances MacDormand were very funny, Clooney and Malkovich were very good, and we still don’t get Tilda Swinton.

Anyway, highly recommended, especially if you’re like me and enjoy movies of less than 2 hours. Want to know more. Click here.

  • Virginia and I were taking a walk and heard a bird making a bunch of noises. We couldn’t quite make out what it was. So … what is it? Click here to listen.

  • Tour de France leader Alberto Contador (in yellow) and the Schleck Brothers power up the last mountain climb in Stage 17. The brothers moved into 2nd and 3rd places in the race, ahead of Lance Armstrong, who will try to make up ground in Thursday’s Stage 18 time trial. It’s been an interesting race, mostly because Armstrong’s presence added intrigue to Team Astana. Also, Contador has made several questionable decisions, where he’s attacked in situations where he would have been better served to sit and wait. Armstrong’s pretty frustrated, and now he’ll be lucky to get on the podium (top-3 finish) on Sunday.
